"We're not sure on the reasoning behind the increase in numbers, but we are doing what we can to see that these people returned to their homes safely," said one police official.
In the previous three weeks alone reports state that a shocking number of at least forty new missing persons were reported to the NYC police department.
One fact possibly related to the development is that crime rates and attacks on the streets have also increased.
As a warning, NYPD have released the following statement: "For now we ask that people try to take appropriate safety precautions, our most important suggestion being remain indoors during the late evening hours."
If any suspicious behavior is seen, or if any tips relating to the whereabouts of missing persons can be given, please report to the New York City police department as soon as possible.
