Or so he thought. Sleep was falling into the category of wishful thinking, and the few hours he managed to get were filled with fragmented recurring, and not entirely pleasant, dreams. It wasn’t until a month ago that he had put stock in dreams being anything more than a byproduct of information processing. That in and of itself raised a red flag. “Better watch out, Rus. Next thing you know, you’ll be visiting psychics and obsessing over ouija board messages,” he imagined his sister Athena teasing him.
In the dreams, there was a silhouette of a woman with exceptionally long hair, and every time they met she pleaded with him to find something. When she would say the name of what he needed to find, the words became distorted, incoherent, as if they were somehow damaged or blocked. It could have been another language, maybe even a made up one, or simply dream-induced gibberish – he couldn’t be sure – all he knew was that he had to find it and soon… for both their sakes.
The entire idea was crazy as hell, but, maybe if he found whatever he was looking for, it would stop the dreams.
Ikarus was wandering Central Park, making an effort to explore a different place in the area every day until he had formed an accurate map in his memory. His stay in New York continuously found ways to be extended – so much so that he was tempted to get an apartment somewhere. Unfortunately, those days he was spending a lot more time in his head than paying attention to where he was going and making mental notes about the area. Eventually he would realize he was hopelessly lost and get a cab back to his hotel, then start over the next day.
Lightly calloused fingers slipped into the inside pocket of his jacket and withdrew a sterling cigarette case – a gift from his grandfather, despite his insistence that he shouldn’t smoke. In a practiced motion, he slipped a cigarette into his mouth and lit the end, taking a long drag. He held it in his lungs until he had to let it go, releasing a deep sigh with it. Maybe I should see a doctor. he thought, his thumb scratching at his stubble before taking another deep drag.
As he rounded the next corner of the path he was unexpectedly struck by view. He stopped in his tracks, mouth hanging slightly agape. The cigarette fell from his mouth, bouncing off the tip of his shoe and rolling on the sidewalk. The weight of his sister’s death suddenly came crashing back down on his shoulders. ‘It’s exactly as she described it,’ he thought, recalling a part of an email she had written him. She had detailed the place exactly as he was seeing it, and understood exactly why she had wanted to take him there.
“Oh my god,” he gasped, his lungs compressed, constricted by the sudden, crushing wave of emotions. Ikarus stumbled over to a nearby bench and tried to catch his breath, one hand clutching his chest. “Oh my god,” he said again as the voice in his head reminded him that he would never see his sister again. He leaned forward and held his face in his hands, palms pressed firmly over his eyes as the flood of tears began. [/style] |

Her nerves were no longer upset, or at least they were numb, and her home was far enough away. The fights that she had with her mother always threatened to drive her towards the brink of insanity. And even with them happening as frequently as they occurred she still saw herself peering over the edges of her mind each and every time, contemplating where to go from there. Not as if it mattered though, since the situation always ended with Lune going home. Until she went along with the cycle though, she had temporarily fled to the usual spot- central park, and was now resting on a bench underneath the shade with her knees pulled up from the ground to her chest and her head down. She was a complete recluse in this position, physically and mentally, and it would have taken a keen eye to notice the small girl that was purposely separating herself from the world. She felt sorry for herself, so as a result she was going to hide in a corner and lick her wounds like a broken cat. Her dreams were now more comforting than the actual world around her. Minutes passed of this same process. Lune sat there listening to the passing of people just as occupied in their own worlds as she was. It was all the same chit chat over and over again until a voice had caught her attention with an unexpected clarity. "Oh my god."She peeked up, looking through her hair, intrigued by the panicked expression that flooded in with the man's voice. He sat across the path from her, on a bench of his own, looking distraught and panicked. Much more than that, in fact- he was clutching his chest. That got her attention. She let her feet fall to the ground, and stood up, taking a tentative step forward. It wasn't really normal or very smart for one to just walk up to a stranger in the city, but after all, she didn't embody either of those qualities very well. So she began to move towards him, slowly but all the more surely as she soon found herself standing over him. She bent down on one knee, reaching what was supposed to be eye level for the both of them (though she couldn't be quite sure, since she couldn't see his eyes), and rested a hand on the bench next to him. "A- are you okay?"She sounded how she felt, meek and unsure, but nonetheless the damage had been done and she had inserted herself into whatever problem this stranger was having.[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; text-align: center; color: 686868; letter-spacing: -2px; margin-top: -5px;]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; text-align: center; color: f1f1f1; margin-top: -5px;]AFTER TODAY PASSES I WILL FORGET WHAT LOVE IS[/style] [/style][STYLE=font-family: tahoma; font-size: 8px;]Made by MINNIE of BTN[/style]

A combination of horror and embarrassment rushed to the forefront of his emotions momentarily. He had not expected anyone to care if he had a good cry off to the side, or even to have had anyone to gain attention from, in spite of the fact that Central Park was a rather popular place. As horribly embarrassed as he was about it, though, he was equally appreciative of this stranger’s seeming kindness.
“No,” he said bluntly, when he finally had to release the breath that was burning his lungs, “not really.” Ikarus focused on his breathing and ceasing as much of his tears as possible, sitting up straight and wiping at his eyes over and over with the backs of his hands. “Thank you for asking, though,” he added, trying to soften his tone, but not sounding half as genuine as he felt. He released a shuddering sigh to further steady his emotionally charged breaths.
Finally, he allowed his cerulean gaze to meet hers. ‘Stunning.’ he thought, immediately enamored by the young woman’s soulfully honest eyes. After a moment, he realized how much more awkward he was making things and shifted his eyes to the less interesting sidewalk, clearing his dry throat. He ran a hand through his hair, cleared his throat again, allowing his gaze to flicker to the woman again, but only briefly.
“Sorry if I interrupted you or ruined your day or something. It’s, uh, it’s been a rough week.” Ikarus let out a soft, slightly nervous, humorless laugh. Her stare was very direct, almost analytical – though not so harsh, not at all. She had said almost nothing, yet she seemed to have brought such a wave of calm and comfort with the genuine concern she expressed for him. It was not something he was accustomed to finding in people, let alone strangers. ‘Okay, well, maybe that’s because you mostly work with dead people. Dead eyes. Dead silence.’ [/style] |

That was, until he shifted his gaze to the sidewalk. Lune shifted her weight, suddenly uncomfortable, but she listened to him talk, nodding as he did, but with a chuckle she added in- "No, you're not ruining my day, I promise." With that, she stood up, patting off any dirt that had clung onto her jeans before taking a seat next to the man on the bench. "But I'm sorry to hear that." Ever so slightly, she let a frown slip onto her lips, picturing the way he had been clutching his chest just minutes ago. Without comprehending what a mind to mouth filter was, she bluntly said, "It seems like it's been a lot more than rough, though." But quickly, she followed up with, "Not that it's any of my business, of course." She chuckled again, though it wasn't out of humor. Just a noise to fill in her awkward gaps. She looked in front of her, watching strangers pass by, before looking back to the man. "I was a little worried, though. You looked like you were about to pass out." Pausing for a second, she sighed. "Sorry." The apology didn't make sense, unless she was apologizing for being rude, but maybe she was being rude, jumping next to this man with no warning at all.[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; text-align: center; color: 686868; letter-spacing: -2px; margin-top: -5px;]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; text-align: center; color: f1f1f1; margin-top: -5px;]AFTER TODAY PASSES I WILL FORGET WHAT LOVE IS[/style] [/style][STYLE=font-family: tahoma; font-size: 8px;]Made by MINNIE of BTN[/style]

He leaned forward, bracing his forearms atop his knees, and clasping his hands together, subtly watching as she moved to sit next to him.
Ikarus confirmed her statement with a nod, and found himself a little impressed by her perceptivity (then again, he had not exactly hidden then fact that he was struggling). It had been more than rough. His felt like it was shattering, smashing, crushing in on itself.
“It’s alright,” he assured her when she apologized, more out of habit than actually feeling the need to accept an apology from her. If anything, he should be the one apologizing to her. After a moment, he added, “You’re right, though. It has been a lot more than rough.”
“My—” Ikarus paused. He swallowed hard, the backs of his eyes beginning to sting with the threat of more tears. He took a deep breath and tried to laugh it out, but it ended up sounding more like a quiet cough. He was not sure why he suddenly felt like telling this stranger what he was struggling with. “Uhm.”
Maybe it was the fact that even if his parents were in New York with him, he would still have to cope alone. Maybe he was just such an emotional wreck he was willing to take advantage of the first person that dared to ask how he was doing. Or maybe it was just her – beautifully kind, immediately trustworthy, and seemingly bearing a genuine concern for the well-being of a stranger.
At length, he straightened his posture and met her gaze, ready to say it. “My sister was found dead in her apartment. I had to identify the body yesterday.” Ikarus was impressed with how he had been able to control his voice, though it had strained at first. He blinked and felt a hot, salty tear roll down his cheek. When had he started crying again?
His cerulean eyes fell to the bench space between them and brought a knuckle up to wipe away the tears. “Sorry,” he told her with another slight and humorless laugh. “You probably weren’t actually looking for an answer.” [/style] |

He made a faulty attempt to pass off his emotions, but ultimately it failed. So she sat there, even more conflicted and confused on how to react to his emotional state. She felt uncomfortable, simply staring at him, so she turned her head to face down, now staring at her hands. "You don't have to explain," she squeaked. "I mean, if it's too hard, then I don't want to put you in some type of state."But who was she kidding, she had already put herself there, and he was already in 'some type of state.' He continued though, pushing through whatever pain the explanation brought, and as he did, Lune's eyes widened. She quickly turned her head back to face him, and as if it were instinctively, she placed a hand on the back of his shoulder. "I- I," it was a rare moment when Lune was actually at a loss for words. She gave herself a second to get her words back in line. "I'm so sorry," was the only thing she found herself capable of saying, but if it was any comfort, at least she meant it. Though she didn't understand what it felt like to loose a family member, let alone to have to identify the body afterwards, she could imagine it ordeal, and after all, she was seeing for herself just how difficult it was for this stranger to cope with the loss. He apologized, and wiped away a tear. Lune shook her head in response though. "No, it's alright, honestly." Her hand remained in place on his back, and for a second, she forgot that she didn't even know the man's name. She took her hand away, though she did allow it to linger for a moment, and placed her hand back on her lap. Her gaze remained on him, though. "Is there anyway I can help?" She gave him a soft smile meant to comfort him. But again, it registered with her that she didn't even know who she was offering to assist. She at least knew for certain that he wasn't lying, since she couldn't imagine anybody simply faking this type of grief for sport. And if he was, then he was a damn good actor, though she didn't want to consider that possibility. "I'm not sure what I can do, but I can try, anyways." And after a second- "My name is Lune, by the way."[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; text-align: center; color: 686868; letter-spacing: -2px; margin-top: -5px;]--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[/style] [STYLE=font-family: georgia; font-size: 14px; text-align: center; color: f1f1f1; margin-top: -5px;]AFTER TODAY PASSES I WILL FORGET WHAT LOVE IS[/style] [/style][STYLE=font-family: tahoma; font-size: 8px;]Made by MINNIE of BTN[/style]

Ikarus felt a little more put together, a little stronger with her gentle hand against his shoulder. Finding more genuineness and true sympathy in her eyes than he knew what to do with, his lips managed a small smile. “Thanks,” he told her quietly, honestly feeling a little better to know that she cared, even if she didn’t know him or his sister. Maybe she didn’t even know what it was like to lose someone, but somehow this stranger was capable of assuaging some of the feelings that ate away at him.
“You’re sweet.” Ikarus nearly laughed at the way she asked if there was anything she could do, finding her kindness a little surreal, unexpected. Instead he stifled the urge to laugh into a slightly stronger smile than before and shrugged one shoulder. “You’ve already done so much for me already,” he told her, shaking his head, “I’m not sure I could, in good conscience, ask for anything even if I could think of something.”
It wasn’t even until she had given her name that he realized they had, until that point, forgone introductions. In a weird way, and in spite of the constant reminders that she was a perfect strange bestowing so much kindness, it had all seemed so… natural. “Beautiful name.” He nearly said ‘unique’, but coming from him, it seemed like a bit of an ironic thing to say. “My name’s Ikarus. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lune.” Ikarus offered his hand to her, a weak, yet friendly smile finding his lips. [/style] |

"If you say so," she smiled once more. Now that he was feeling better, even though the improvement probably wasn't much all things considered, she still felt herself relax. She knew she was blushing at his compliment when a small amount of heat began to tinge her cheeks. She laughed in response, and took his hand, shaking it as they sealed the deal on their introductions. "Well, thanks, and the pleasure is all mine" laughing, she looked up from their clasped hands to his face, and as she did she wondered why Ikarus, as he had called himself, had such a different effect on her than most strangers. Not that strangers had any effect on her at all, honestly, but that had been the thing, hadn't it? When Lune talked to others for the first time, they never managed to make her feel at as ease with herself quite like she felt now. Strange. Seconds passed, and she made a mental note on his eyes. "What a nice color," she thought, before her gaze fell from his face to their still connected hands. She pulled away quickly, awkwardly apologizing as she did.
